What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the breast, when cells begin to grow out of control, according to the American Cancer Society. Cancer cells usually form a tumor that can be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump.

How Many People are Affected?

In the United States, it is estimated that among women there will be 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer which includes new cases of primary breast cancer, but not recurrences of original breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Affects Men, Too

Did you know that breast cancer can affect men as well? The risk is much lower and less than one percent of all breast cancer cases occur in men. However, it still happens. It is estimated that 2,620 new cases in men will occur in 2020.

What Are the Risk Factors?

It’s important to know your risk factors and pay attention to them as you get older. Some risk factors like being a woman and aging you can’t control but leading a healthy lifestyle can lower your risk. Here are some risk factors described by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Factors That Cannot Be Changed:

  • Age
  • Family History of Breast Cancer
  • Being Female
  • Breast Density
  • Height

Factors you can change (which can decrease the risk):

  • Maintaining a Healthy Body Weight
  • Exercise
  • Breastfeeding
  • A Healthy Diet
  • Limiting Alcohol Intake

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of breast cancer can include, but are not limited to:

  • A lump in the underarm area
  • Breast pain
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Swelling of all or part of the breast

How is it diagnosed?

Many breast cancers are found through mammogram readings, which are very important because they can detect cancers in early stages (even before they can be felt) and before symptoms even begin to develop.

Understanding the factors which may affect your risk of breast cancer can help you and your health care provider to develop a screening plan that’s right for you. Studies suggest that women start getting annual mammograms by age 45, but as early as age 40. It’s also important to do regular self-examinations. The earlier it’s detected, the better chance you have of beating it!

What You Can Do to Help

Knowing your risk factors, maintaining a healthy lifestyle. getting yearly mammograms and doing self-examinations will help you to maintain good health. However, breast cancer cases still exist and it’s important to support the cause for those who are affected.

By purchasing the special edition pink Venom HP, you will be doing just that because Induction Innovations will be donating a portion of each sale to breast cancer research. Together, we can make a difference!
